 The Whistleblower

A prequel to the 1968 classic starring Charlton Heston, "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" tells the story of how us human maniacs blew it up, letting loose an ape revolution.  Another Earth
The winner of the Alfred P. Sloan Prize at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, "Another Earth" is about the discovery of a nearby planet that duplicates everything on our own world.  The Mikado & Topsy-Turvy
Like Gilbert and Sullivan themselves, these two releases make a perfect pair. The 1939 film of "The Mikado" was the first Gilbert and Sullivan work to be filmed. Sixty years later, British director Mike Leigh recounted the original 1885 production of "The Mikado" for his backstage drama, "Topsy Turvy." TPR's Nathan Cone recently viewed both discs. For his first feature film as both a director and star, Buster Keaton indulged both his love of trains and fantastic stunts while sending up the great Hatfield-McCoy feud. Charlie Chaplin hadn't planned to make Modern Times a silent picture, but after a few days of shooting dialogue, he went back to the format he knew best.  The Complete Metropolis
In 2008, the biggest movie story of the year for classic film fans wasn't who won the Oscar for Best Picture, it was the fact that a nearly complete 16mm print of Fritz Lang's Metropolis had been discovered in Buenos Aires. The film, cut by studios and censors over the years, would at last be seen in a form close to the way it looked when it premiered in 1927.
