Beethoven Festival Screening: 'A Clockwork Orange'
TPR Cinema celebrates the 2012 Beethoven Festival in sly fashion with a screening of “A Clockwork Orange” on Thursday, January 26 at the Santikos Bijou.
Stanley Kubrick paints a dark and threatening portrait of a future England where derby-topped hoodlums run amok, and a government more concerned with staying in power than with the welfare of its citizens, law-abiding and otherwise.
Malcolm McDowell, in a career-defining performance, plays Alex, the young protagonist and “humble narrator” of the story. Alex spends his free time dodging school and getting his kicks from inflicting a bit of the old ultra-violence on hapless victims alongside his three droogs. But after Alex finds himself in the arms of the law, he’s chosen to take part in a new program designed to reform criminals into law-abiding citizens. Instead, the controversial Ludovico Technique robs Alex of his free will.
Based on Anthony Burgess’s novel, “A Clockwork Orange” was nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and has amassed a cult following in the 40 years since its original release in 1971.
Stanley Kubrick, a master filmmaker, brilliantly used classical music in most of his films. For “A Clockwork Orange,” he turned to composer Wendy Carlos to help create a part-electronic score based on Ludwig van Beethoven’s "Ninth Symphony." The lovely Ninth provides a stark contrast to Alex’s nightmarish visions. Other composers in the film include Gioachino Rossini and Henry Purcell.
