September 2, 2010 · Turtle Island Quartet, known for fusing the classical quartet esthetic with contemporary American musical styles, takes on the music of Jimi Hendrix with their new album Have You Ever Been. . . ?
The quartet has previously tackled folk, bluegrass, swing, be-bop, funk, R&B, new age, rock, hip-hop, as well as music of Latin America and India.
Now with their new release, they reinterpret selected works by Hendrix's pivotal album Electric Ladyland.
The architect of Turtle Island Quartet's revolutionary compositional style is violinist David Balakrishnan.
He talks with Jon Clare about the genre-bending Quartet, their new release and his epic new composition which appears on Have You Ever Been. . . ?, titled "Tree of Life."
Turtle Island Quartet is currently on tour. The group makes a stop in Brownsville, TX next month at the University of Texas at Brownsville.

Turtle Island Quartet is the winner of the 2006 and 2008 Grammy Award for Best Classical Crossover Album. Luna Negra is an acclaimed dance company, celebrating the work of contemporary Latino choreographers. After separate performances, both groups will come together to present "Danzon," a new work by Luna Negra's former artistic director Eduardo Valaro.
