February 6, 2012 · Dan Skinner talks with Peter Ladner about the growing trend of cultivating food in cities.
Ladner contends that urban food production has numerous environmental benefits, including the reduction of our foods carbon footprint.
In his book, he presents examples from the United States and Canada that demonstrate how an increasing number of cities are supporting local food production. He reports on how the practice reduces the effects of poverty, boosts the regional economy, lowers crime rates, encourages real estate development and helps cities deal with waste issues. Ladner says he believes the trend toward urban food production will continue based on the growing public interest and support for the idea.
