International Women's Day

March 2, 2010 · In the February 2010 edition of La Voz de Esperanza, editor Gloria Ramirez writes that in March of 1985 a small group of about 300 people marched from the steps of City Hall to Plaza de Zacate (Milam Park), which is across from the Santa Rosa Hospital.  La Voz is the Esperanza Peace and Justice Center’s monthly publication.

It was the first International Woman’s Day march held in San Antonio.  The marchers held banners, continues Ramirez, with the words " Peace, Work, Equality."  On Saturday, March 6, 2010 the 20th anniversary will be celebrated with a march which will begin in front of the Grand Hyatt Hotel and end again at the Plaza de Zacate.

Marissa Gonzalez and Katherine Watson are members of the IWD march planning committee.  They spoke with Texas Public Radio’s Ernie Villarreal, and say that while the number of participants has increased — about one thousand people marched last year — the issues such as equal access to job opportunities, equal pay for women and peace activism still remain, even after 20 years.
