New federal money is flowing in for renovations at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, thanks to legislation signed by President Obama in February. TPR’s Eileen Pace reports.

August 4, 2010 · National cemeteries in San Antonio and Kerrville will receive $4.8 million dollars to raise and realign headstones, repair gravesites, and install or expand irrigation systems, as well as to purchase and repair maintenance equipment and vehicles.

The funds are part of the American Recovery and Restoration Act, the goals of which are to create and save jobs and to spur the economy. National cemetery improvements are to include projects that conserve energy, such as the use of wind turbines and solar photovoltaic systems.

More than 100 cemeteries, soldiers’ lots and monument sites important to veterans will see improvements through the $50 million dollars designated by the ARRA.
