A Fortune 500 company and leading global medical technology company is setting up shop in San Antonio. BD is bringing its new North American professional services headquarters here, further bolstering the city’s bio-medical industry. Texas Public Radio’s David Martin Davies has the story.
August 19, 2010 · Becton, Dickinson and Company, also known as BD, plans to hire about 300 people when it comes to San Antonio. That will add an annual payroll of over $12 million dollars to the city’s economy.
But Mario Hernandez of the San Antonio Economic Development Foundation says the positive impact of BD coming to San Antonio is beyond the addition of jobs; their arrival adds to the city’s growing reputation as a leading city in the bio-science industry.
“When you think about recent news including Medtronic and even InCube – Metco and Healthways – the point is that you can go on and on – that we’re attracting the attention of health care bio-science companies. They can see that the strength of that sector here in San Antonio is a big advantage,” said Hernandez.
The Texas state government is investing $1.5 million into the BD deal through the Texas Enterprise Fund.
“The Enterprise Fund is referred to as a deal closing fund and that could not be a more accurate statement. It made a big difference for the state of Texas to step up and say 'We want this outstanding company and we are willing to invest,'” he said.
BD develops, manufactures and sells medical devices and instrument systems.
The company said it plans to work with San Antonio educational institutions to develop specific training curricula for this project.
