Students at Lee High School started their day with a message from Mayor Julian Castro. Texas Public Radio’s Eileen Pace reports.
August 23, 2010 ·Mayor Castro goes to schools at the beginning of each school year. This year, he met the buses arriving at Lee High School on the near northside and then opened the students’ first day with an inspirational message about finishing strong the last four years.
“They know that high school is not enough, that they need a college degree. As a city, we need them to succeed and get a college degree so that we can be a thriving 21st century city,” Castro said.
Castro said he talked particularly to juniors and seniors about the importance of not letting a big college bill scare them off. Castro said he went to Stanford on loans and grants – and although it took him more than 10 years to pay off his student loans – it was worth the effort. |
