September 7, 2010 · An exploratory group of some of the city’s biggest boosters of arts and culture is forming the foundation for a new opera company in San Antonio. The group’s temporary name is “The New San Antonio Opera Company.”
Mel Weingart is the group’s spokesperson. “Our interest is in creating a new company that’s going to present quality opera to San Antonio in a theatrically and musically compelling way, operas that are extremely relevant to today’s world and are performed with the very highest artistic standards,” said Weingart.
Already the group has attracted the attention of big names in the opera world. Veteran opera producer Jim Ireland has signed on to serve as general manager and internationally renowned opera composer Tobias Picker will lead as the artistic director.
“He is extremely excited about the possibility of forming this new company for San Antonio. And the fact that the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts is going to be opening in 2013 is really going to be putting San Antonio’s cultural and artistic life on a very very high level,” said Weingart.
If all goes according to plan, the first production of the New San Antonio Opera Company will be in 2011.
