In between chairman positions, he served as Executive Professor of Business-in-Residence at Texas Lutheran University in Seguin, Texas. Whitacre recently spoke at Texas Lutheran University about the American automobile industry and the global economy. He also spoke about his decision to accept the chairman position at General Motors.

November 20, 2009 · The 2009–10 Texas Water Symposium, created through the partnership of Schreiner University,Texas Tech University, Texas Public Radio, and Hill Country Alliance is a series of four free lectures and forums designed to inform and engage Texas citizens. The second panel discussion in the series, held on November 12, 2009 at the University of Texas at San Antonio, was titled "Our Limited Groundwater Supply: For Whose Desired Future Conditions Are We Planning?" Moderating the panel was Robert E. Mace, Ph.D., of the Texas Water Development Board. The panelists included Mary Ellen Summerlin of the Headwaters Groundwater Conservation District, Weldon Hammond, Ph.D., of the UTSA Center for Water Research, and Gregory M. November 13, 2009 · Nancy Shivers, Vice-President of Programs for the World Affairs Council of San Antonio introduces Dr. Haleh Esfandairi, Director of Middle East Program at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. Dr. Esfandairi was the invited guest speaker of the World Affairs Council of San Antonio. She spoke on November 2, 2009. She was a journalist in her native Iran, where she was also deputy secretary general of the Women's Organization of Iran. Dr. Esfandairi spoke to members and guests of the World Affairs Council of San Antonio about her arrest by the Iranian security authorities in 2007 which is the basis of her book titled My Prison, My Home.
KSTX Town Hall: Transportation
November 6, 2009 · How can we keep San Antonio moving? The region is growing every year, putting additional strain on our transportation infrastructure. Clogged freeways, increased pollution and reliable public transportation are just a few of the problems we face as we try to get from one place to the other. So what does the future of transportation look like in San Antonio and the surrounding area? How can we continue to handle the region’s growth without slowing us down? Texas Public Radio's Terry Gildea led a dialog in which panelists discussed future plans for VIA Metropolitan Transit, the possibilities of light rail, highway improvements and the benefits of commuting by bicycle, as well as regional implications for our commuting decisions. This KSTX Town Hall was held at the Buena Vista Theater on the UTSA Downtown Campus and was part of the Green by Texas Public Radio initiative, a year-round focus on sustainability issues affecting San Antonio and the surrounding community.
Health Care is Broken: How Do We Fix It?
October 30, 2009 · The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio held a panel discussion whose title was "Health Care is Broken: How Do We Fix It?" It was the Frank Bryant Jr. M.D. Memorial Lecture in Medical Ethics of the UT-Health Science Center. The panel was comprised of nationally known experts on health care reform. On the panel are Stuart Altman, Ph.D. an economist and professor of national health policy at the Heller School for Social Policy and Management at Brandeis University; David Hunt, M.D. chief medical officer at the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services; Ana Malinow, M.D., associate professor of pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine; and Jeremy Lazarus, Speaker of the House of Delegates of the American Medical Association. Marc Morial, President of the National Urban League October 23, 2009 ·The Newsmaker Hour for October 23 features Marc Morial, President of the National Urban League. Addicott says that out of the 200 law schools across the country, the School of Law at St. Mary's University is the only one with a terrorism law center. 2009 Austin-San Antonio Corridor Growth Summit
October 9, 2009 ·Mary Peters, former Transportation Secretary under President George W. Bush, was the luncheon keynote speaker at the 2009 Austin-San Antonio Corridor Growth Summit. The summit was held at the Embassy Suites in San Marcos on October 2, 2009 and hosted by Austin and San Antonio Business Journals. The focus of this year's summit was transportation. It is one of the biggest factors to the corridor's success moving commerce and people along IH 35, as the region continues to grow. Gustavo Arellano of "Ask A Mexican"
October 9, 2009 ·Gustavo Arellano is the author of the column "Ask A Mexican", which appears in San Antonio's alternative newsweekly, the San Antonio Current. He is also a staff writer with the O.C. Weekly, an alternative weekly in Orange County, California. He is also a contributing editor to the Los Angeles Times, he's appeared on the Today Show, Nightline, The Situation with Tucker Gibson and the Colbert Report. In 2006, he won the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies award for best column in a large circulation weekly. Arellano says he'll mow lawns for $15, $10 if he gets a water break. Texas Public Radio's Ernie Villarreal spoke with Arellano at a reception held for him by the San Antonio Current in September.

College Football in San Antonio August 14, 2009 · By 2011, San Antonio will have Division I, II and III NCAA college football. The Trinity University Tigers football team have become a team to reckon with in Division III and for the longest time the only college football game in town. This year though, the University of the Incarnate Word fields a Division II football team, the Cardinals. Then in 2011, the University of Texas at San Antonio Roadrunners will begin Division I college football play. All three coaches, Trinity's Steve Mohr, IUW's Mike Santiago and UTSA's Larry Coker, gathered at Sunset Station for Tailgate Talk sponsored by San Antonio Sports to talk colleege football and what that means for San Antonio.

A panel of experts convened at the Buena Vista Theater on the UTSA Downtown Campus to disucss the issue of air quality. With the arrival of summer and triple-digit temperatures come the Air Quality Health Alert days that are becoming all too frequent in San Antonio. San Antonio is teetering on earning a non-attainment designation from the Environmental Protection Agency for failing to meet federal standards on ambient air quality. Many air quality experts and government officials agree that the area will earn that status before summer’s end, leading to costly consequences for our government and citizens. Heat-Related Deaths Among Secondary Student Athletes June 26, 2009 · The 60th annual convention of the National Athletic Trainers Association was held in San Antonio June 18-20, 2009. The number of heat-related deaths during the past decade of secondary student athletes has been a major concern of the NATA and other sports organizations. The conference began with a panel discussion introducing a task force committee's consensus statement on the pre-season heat acclimatization guidelines for secondary school athletes. Diabetes in San Antonio June 19, 2009 · Diabetes is a illness affecting a large number of the San Antonio population. Health official estimate there are even several thousand more who aren't aware that they have diabetes. On this Newsmaker Hour, Dr. Vincent Fonseca, Epidemiologist for the State of Texas is the keynote speaker at a luncheon hosted by Humana, Inc., the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the San Antonio Chapter of the American Diabetes Association. Lauro Bustamante
Lauro Bustamante is 58 years-old and has lived in San Antonio for more than five decades. He graduated with a law degree from the University of Houston in 1979 and operates a private law practice in San Antonio. Bustamante ran unsuccessfully in 2006 as Democrat for Texas Justice in the 4th Court of Appeals. His platform centers around a large expansion of local education.
Napoleon Madrid
Napoleon Madrid is 44 years-old and has called San Antonio home for more than 18 years. He founded the non-profit organization United Americans for The Arts and Trades in 2003. Madrid entered the race in an effort to “clean up the corruption of City Hall.” Unlike most of the candidates on this ballot, Madrid has not run in a previous race for mayor.
Julie Iris Oldham
Julie Iris Oldham has lived in San Antonio for 57 years. She became a political activist in 1990 working on behalf of the homeless in our community. She’s the co-founder of Texas Women’s Business Association and also founded and ran Dunhill Personnel, a recruiting firm, from 1980 to 1985. Oldham wants to end “city corruption” if elected mayor. Her visibility in city government for several decades has prompted her nickname: Mama Bexar.
Rhett R. Smith
Rhett R. Smith is 58 years-old and has established a career in private security. Smith ran for U.S. Senator from Texas in the Democratic primary, but failed to win the nomination. He graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1973 with a B.A. in Accounting. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1979 to 1983. Smith says ending what he calls political corruption and protecting the first amendment would be his priorities in he was elected mayor.
Michael “Commander” Idrogo
Michael “Commander” Idrogo is a Navy commander veteran of foreign wars according to his website. He claims that unnecessary raises given to city staff are the root of “corruption” he would end if elected mayor. Idrogo also claims to have elaborate plans to bring fashion designers and professional sports teams to San Antonio, and reveal a hidden source of water to ease drought in the area. Mr. Idrogo did not respond to repeated requests to be a part the program.

April 3, 2009 · Texas Public Radio hosted a live mayoral debate with the four major candidates vying for the office at noon on April 3, 2009. TPR's Terry Gildea moderated a lively conversation between former Councilman Julián Castro, District 8 Councilwoman Diane Cibrian, political consultant Trish DeBerry-Mejia and District 2 Councilwoman Sheila McNeil. Joining Gildea with questions for the candidates were Tracy Idell Hamilton, reporter for the San Antonio Express-News and Elaine Wolff, editor of the San Antonio Current. They posed questions on a variety of issues of concern to the citizens of San Antonio.

San Antonio had recently suffered some economic setbacks with AT&T moving its corporate headquarters from San Antonio to Dallas. A couple of weeks later, news came that Toyota's manufacturing plant in San Antonio was suspending production of its Tundra truck line several months until demand caught up with inventory. Despite these events, the mayor highlighed some bright spots in San Antonio's economic picture.

“How Today's Churches are Mixing God with Politics and Losing their Way” June 1, 2007 · Kathleen Kennedy Townsend was Maryland's first Lieutenant Governor. She is the eldest child of the late Robert F. Kennedy and Ethel Kennedy. She talked on April 6, 2007 to the City Club of Cleveland about her latest book Failing America's Faithful: How Today's Churches are Mixing God with Politics and Losing their Way. In the book, she recounts her father's struggle to realize the goals of improving the world by helping the poor and starving amidst the turmoil of the 1960s.

Documentary filmmaker Ken Burns May 11, 2007 · Although he has been making documentary films for more than thirty years, Ken Burns became a household name after his most notable production, the mini-series "The Civil War." He is an Academy Award and Emmy Award nominee, and received an Emmy for this documentaries "The Civil War" in 1990, "Baseball" in 1994 and "Jazz" in 2001. His newest film, which PBS television will air in September, is titled "The War", about the sacrifices Americans in several communities gave during World War II. Burns has received criticism from Latino organizations because the film lacks any mention of the sacrifices and contributions made by minorities. Burns speaks at the City Club of Cleveland.

Iraqi Oil for Food Program April 27, 2007 · Former Federal Reserve Chairman Paul A. Volcker spoke at the City Club of Cleveland on April 13, 2007. He was chairman during the Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan administrations. Under his leadership, the Federal Reserve was largely credited for ending the United States' stagflation crisis of the 1970's by limiting the growth of the money supply. Volcker talks about his investigation into the Iraqi Oil for Food program.
Bilateral relationship between the U.S. and Mexico April 20, 2007 · The Council of American Ambassadors, based in Washington D.C. met in San Antonio on April 10, 2007. Mexico's Ambassador to the United States, Arturo Sarukhan, was in San Antonio to participate in a number of events sponsored by the CAA. One of those events included a luncheon in cooperation with the World Affairs Council of San Antonio. At the luncheon, Ambassador Sarukhan was the guest speaker where he spoke about the bilateral relationship between the United States and Mexico.

“The Enron Case” April 13, 2007 · The American Bar Association's Litigation Section held their annual Spring meeting in San Antonio April 11-14, 2007. One of the sessions included a panel discussion comprised of three of the attorneys who were involved in what was seen as "the Case of the Century", the case U.S. vs. Skilling and Lay or more commonly called "The Enron Case." On the panel were Bruce Collins, defense attorney for Ken Lay, Chairman of Enron who died at the age of 64 in 2006 and was awaiting sentencing after being found guilty of conspiracy and fraud; Daniel Petrocelli, defense attorney for Jeffrey Skilling who was sentenced to 24 years, four months in prison after also being found guilty of conspiracy and fraud. The Government's prosecuting attorney on the panel was Kathryn Ruemmler. The panel discussion was held on April 12, 2007. Chair of the Section of Litigation of the American Bar Association, Kim Askew who is a partner with the law firm of Hugh Luce, LLP in Dallas, moderates the discussion.

Gutierrez is the 35th Secretary of the U.S. Department of Commerce, overseeing a diverse Cabinet agency of 38,000 workers and a $6.5 billion budget. The Commerce Department focuses on promoting American business at home and aboard. Secretary Gutierrez was an invited guest speaker at the annual meeting of the Associated General Contractors of America in San Antonio March 21-24th.
Mary Peters, secretary of the U.S. Department of Transportation March 30, 2007 · Mary Peters is the 15th secretary of the U.S. Department of Transportation. She was nominated by President George W. Bush on September 5, 2006, and confirmed by the Senate on September 30, 2006. She is responsible for maintaining a safe, reliable and efficient transportation system while leading an agency with almost 60,000 employees and a budget of $61.6 billion overseeing air, maritime and surface transportation missions. “Leadership in Local Community Development” March 23, 2007 · The African American Community History Project focused on economic development on Saturday, February 17, 2007 during the three day "The Commerce of Culture" program. Dr. Lloyd Blanchard was the invited luncheon speaker who addressed the issue of "Leadership in Local Community Development." Dr. Blanchard is a native of San Antonio and has worked in a number of government departments including the Office of Management and Budget and the Small Business Administration. A nationally recognized expert in neighborhood economic development issues, Dr. Blanchard is currently the Executive Assistant to the Chancellor at Louisiana State University.

Johnson Chair in International Affairs and Middle Eastern Studies at Sarah Lawrence College located just north of New York City. He is a senior analyst and regular commentator for ABC News and National Public Radio's Morning Edition. He has appeared in many television and radio networks around the world including CNN, CBS, the BBC and Al-Jazeera. “Nature-Deficit Disorder” March 2, 2007 · Richard Louv, author and journalist on family, nature and community, speaks about his most recent book titled Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children from Nature-Deficit Disorder. In the book, Louv argues that the increased emphasis on technology and structured play has “de-natured” today’s children and calls for a return to an awareness of and appreciation for the natural world. Louv sees the restorative power of nature and provides many ideas for change. He is an advisor to the Ford Foundation’s Leadership for a Changing World award program and the Scientific Council on the Developing Child. He is also a visiting scholar at the Heller School for Social Policy and Management at Brandeis University. He is a founder of Connect for Kids, the largest child advocacy site on the web. He has appeared on numerous radio and television programs including National Public Radio’s Morning Edition and Talk of the Nation, Good Morning America, The Morning Show on CBS and on the Newshour with Jim Lehrer on PBS to name a few. The United Nations commissioned his monograph on fatherhood for the U. N. Year of the Child.
“Islam” February 23, 2007 · Colonel W. Patrick Lang is a retired senior military intelligence officer. He spoke on February 6, 2007 at St. Mary's University in San Antonio on Islam. He was the invited guest speaker of the University's Graduate International Relations Program and the Fund for Judaeo-Christian studies. He was the first director of the Defense Human Intelligence Service within the Defense Intelligence Agency. Col. Lang was also the first professor of Arabic language at the U. S. Military Academy at West Point, New York.

“The Middle East: A French Perspective” January 19, 2007 · The French Ambassador to the United States, his Excellency Jean David-Levitte was in San Antonio on January 18, 2007. He spoke at the Recital Hall on the campus of the University of Texas at San Antonio on the topic “The Middle East: A French Perspective.” In his presentation, the Ambassador touches on the reasons France will not send troops to take part in the Iraq War, why the French government saw the situation as potentially dangerous one and how even after this current riff between the United States and French governments, their relationship will continue to be a strong one because of their shared history.
“Puerto Rico: The Unspoken Challenge to the United States” January 12, 2007 · Dr. Efrén Rivera Ramos is the Dean and Professor of Law at the University of Puerto Rico School of Law. He was the invited speaker of the City Club of Cleveland on November 17, 2006. Mr. Ramos has written extensively on the constitutional and political relationship between the United States and Puerto Rico, including an influential book entitled The Legal Construction of Identity: The Judicial and Social Legacy of American Colonialism in Puerto Rico.

One Woman's Odyssey to Rescue Africa's Children December 22, 2006 · December 1st was designated as World AIDS Day. In observance of that day, the City Club of Cleveland invited author Melissa Fay Greene to talk about her latest book titled There Is No Me Without You: One Woman's Odyssey to Rescue Africa's Children. In 2005, Ethiopia counted among its population 1.5 million orphans. Officials estimate some 12 million children have been orphaned by HIV/AIDS in all of sub-Sahara Africa. In her book, she tells the story of the AIDS crisis in Africa. Ms. Greene's other books are The Temple Bombing and Praying for Sheetrock: A Work of Nonfiction.

The World War I Living History Project
This week in the Newsmaker Hour time slot, we present a special Veterans Day program. In 1917-1918, 4.5 million Americans served in World War I. Of that number only 14 remain. The World War I Living History Project honors the sacrifices and contributions of America's last surviving WWI veterans. The producers have travelled the country in search of the men and women who made the world (in President Wilson's words) "safe for democracy." Twelve of these veterans, aged 105 to 115, share their reminiscences, humor and wit on a two-hour radio special hosted by award-winning CBS anchor Walter Cronkite.

This program featured David Gergen, currently a professor of public service at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and editor-at-large for the magazine U.S.News and World Report. The Code Red Report
The Code Red report is a study on the health care conditions of the State of Texas with a list of recommendations by a task force comprised by a non-partisan group of individuals including small and large business employers, hospital and medical school officials, health policy experts and community and business leaders. The Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce held its 2006 Health Care Summit on September 7, 2006. In addition to being a professor of International Law at American University, he is also an attorney, a journalist and a diplomat. Today she is the chair of the 22-lawyer litigation group Debevois and Plimpton LLP in New York City. She spoke on March 24, 2006 at St. Philip's College in San Antonio as part of the 2005-2006 President's Lecture Series. LaDuke was the recipient of the 1989 Reebok Human Rights Award and was named on of the "50 Leaders for the Future" by Time Magazine in 1995. He is the 12th Congressional District Representative from Pennsylvania, a seat he has held since 1974. Tex G. Hall is the former President of the National Congress of American Indians and Chairman of the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nation. Sarah Chayes was a foreign correspondent for National Public Radio, beginning her work with NPR in 1997. Alamo Community College District Bond Election
ACCD is asking voters to approve a bond of $450 million on February 5, 2005. The money will fund needed improvements at the district’s four colleges. However, the consolidation of the nursing and allied health careers programs and its proposed location in the South Texas Medical Center, has brought angry response from business, civic and community leaders. For many, this creates a dilemma, as the bond is an all or nothing situation. Proponents from the district as well as several community sources who oppose the measure present their views. Escape from Slavery
Francis Bok is a 23-year old Sudanese native who spent ten years of his childhood as a slave. He recounts his experiences to an audience attending the final lecture of the 2003-2004 President's Lecture Series of St. Philip's College in San Antonio. San Antonio City Charter Amendment
On May 15, 2004 San Antonio registered voters will go to the polls to vote on whether they want longer terms of office for the mayor and city council district representatives; pay them an annual salary, instead of the per meeting payment they receive; appoint an ethics review board; and permit city council representatives to hire their own staff. KSTX’s Charles Booker was the moderator of a panel discussion on the issue which was broadcast on May 12, 2004 on KSTX. Booker is a native San Antonian and understands both sides of the issue. On the panel was Bob Martin, President of the Homeowners Taxpayers Association, the organization who spearheaded the movement to establish term limits for San Antonio city council district representatives fourteen years ago. Mike Novak, Chairman of the Board of the Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce. Novak has advocated in favor of changing the term limits. Martin and Novak argued the pros and cons of the propositions before San Antonio voters. Also on the panel to talk about the issues was Susan Wright, a member of the city charter committee. She talked about how the committee arrived at the propositions before the voters. Tucker Gibson, professor and Chair of the Political Science Department at Trinity University, who talked about how other cities have fared with salaried elected city council representatives. And Art Vega, an associate professor of political science at the University of Texas at San Antonio and interim director of the Metropolitan Research and Policy Institute at UTSA. “Obesity in the Media: the Unkindest Cut of All” is the title of the presentation by Sander Gilman, Ph.D. He is the Distinguished Professor of the Liberal Arts and Medicine at the University of Illinois at Chicago and Director of the Humanities Laboratory. Dr. Gilman spoke on March 13, 2004 at the Spring Meeting of the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities whose theme was “Medicine and Media: The Delicate Balance”. FCC Public Hearing on Broadcast Localism
The Federal Communications Commission held a public hearing in San Antonio on January 28, 2004 to hear from the public on how they view the radio and television media serving the local community. The FCC commissioners also heard TV and radio broadcasters express their views on how they do serve the local community. FCC Chairman Michael Powell, was joined by commissioners Kathleen Abernathy, Michael Copps, Kevin Martin and Jonathan Adelstein. The Lockerbie Disaster and its Implications on State Relations Dr. Mansour El KiKhia, associate professor in the Department of Political Science and Geography at the University of Texas at San Antonio. His focus is on American Foreign Policy in the Middle East. He spoke to members and guests of the World Affairs Council of San Antonio on September 9, 2003. On December 21, 1988 Pan American flight 103 took off from London’s Heathrow Airport en route to J-F-K Airport in New York City. As it flew over Lockerbie, Scotland Pan Am flight 103 exploded, killing all 243 passengers and its crew of sixteen. Debris from the explosion also killed eleven people on the ground. British and American officials investigated the cause of the explosion and concluded the aircraft had been destroyed by a bomb. Criminal charges were brought against two Libyan nationals in connection with the disaster. They were also alleged to be agents of Libya’s intelligence service. Libya was also charged with the bombing of a French airliner in 1989. The United Nations levied sanctions against Libya to force it to admit responsibility for both incidents. And just yesterday, the Associated Press reported an agreement by Libya to compensate relatives of the victims of the French airliner paving the way to lift the sanctions. Libya had earlier reached a settlement with relatives of the victims of Pan Am 103. Iraq: A Journalist’s Perspective John Donvan, has been covering the Middle East for ABC news since he joined the network in 1982 as its Tel Aviv-based correspondent. He recently returned to the United States from Iraq, where he had been reporting on the Iraqi war since early March. Earlier this month on June 3rd, Donvan was in San Antonio as the guest speaker of the World Affairs Council of San Antonio. He spoke of his experiences covering the Iraqi war as a unilateral reporter. That is, a reporter who was not attached or “embedded” with a United States military unit. June 13, 2003

She is the granddaughter of Dwight D. Eisenhower, 34th President of the United States. The mission of the institute of which Susan Eisenhower is president, is to advance the intellectual and leadership legacies in foreign and domestic policy of Dwight D. Eisenhower. Relations between the United States and Germany As the United States builds up its military strength along the borders of Iraq in anticipation of a possible war against that country, there are several European countries who oppose the approach the United States is taking against Saddam Hussein. Germany is one of those countries. Mexico Panel Discussion 2003 The annual Mexico panel discussion presented by the World Affairs Council of San Antonio was held on January 22, 2003. “What Shall I Do With This People” Author Milton Viorst was the guest speaker of the World Affairs Council of San Antonio. He spoke to members and guests on December 5, 2002 at a World Affairs Council luncheon at the Hyatt Regency in downtown San Antonio. He has written more than a dozen books including “In the Shadow of the Prophet”, “Rabbi Wars”, “Reaching for the Olive Branch; UNRWA & Peace in the Middle East”, and “Sands of Sorrow: Israel’s Journey from Independence to Uncertainty”. His latest book, “What Shall I Do With This People” is called a meticulously researched history based on the stark premise that Judaism is in crisis. In the book, Viorst argues that the failure of the Jews to resolve the conceptual differences ignited by the Enlightenment two hundred years ago, led to the murder of Israel’s prime minister Yitzhak Rabin. Viorst has worked in the Middle East for more than thirty years as a staff correspondent for The New Yorker. “The Role of Intelligence Agencies” A. Denis Clift is President of the nation’s only accredited institution of higher learning awarding Master of Science of Strategic Intelligence (MSSI) and Bachelor of Science in Intelligence (BSI) degrees. As the guest speaker of the World Affairs Council of San Antonio on October 29, 2002, Clift spoke on the role of intelligence agencies in today’s world. He also spoke on the role of the Joint Military Intelligence College. Economic ties between countries of Western Hemisphere Peter Hakim, President of the Inter-American Dialogue, spoke to members and guests of the World Affairs Council of San Antonio on October 16, 2002 about how the economies of countries in South America are affected by the economic situation in the United States. The Inter-American Dialogue is a center for policy analysis and exchange on western hemisphere relations based in Washington D-C. Prior to heading the center, Mr. Hakim was Vice-President of the Inter-American Foundation, a United States government foundation supporting grassroots development projects in Latin America. He also managed the international resource and environment program of the Ford Foundation and worked for the Foundation in South America. Mr. Hakim writes regularly for the Christian Science Monitor. U.S. News and World Report reporters Three members of the U-S News and World Report magazine news reporting staff were guests of the World Affairs Council of San Antonio annual media panel discussion held on September 17, 2002. Panel members included Kevin Whitelaw, Senior writer on foreign affairs and intelligence; Kenneth Walsh, chief White House correspondent; and Bay Fang. Fang is now a USN&WR national correspondent. She previously was their Beijing bureau chief. Whitelaw, Walsh and Fang spoke on a number of national and international issues making news today. Council on Foreign Relations’ Lawrence Korb on “National Security after 9-11” Lawrence Korb was the invited guest speaker at the World Affairs Council of San Antonio’s Diplomat Appreciation Dinner on August 25,2002. Korb is the Vice-President and Director of Studies at the Council of Foreign Relations, a position he has held since 1998. He is also the holder of the Maurice Greenberg Chair. The title of his presentation to members and guests of the World Affairs Council of San Antonio is “National Security after 9-11”. During the presentation he addresses such topics as the United States’ foreign relations policy, the approach to the plan of attacking Iraq and how other countries are viewing the United States under the Bush administration. Mr. Korb has gained extensive knowledge on national security issues during the past decade. He has used this knowledge to write 15 books, including “The Fall and Rise of the Pentagon”, “American National Security: Policy and Process”, and “Future Visions for U-S Defense Policy”. Mexico Panel Discussion 2002 The annual Mexico panel discussion presented by the World Affairs Council of San Antonio aired Friday evening, July 12 on KSTX, 89.1 FM. A panel of distinguished experts in the field of Mexican economics and politics discuss a range of topics from government to social issues. Roger Wallace, a member of the executive committee of the World Affairs Council of San Antonio, has moderated the Mexico panel for the past several years and will again this evening. He is president and chief executive officer of Investamex, an investment and consulting firm. On the panel are Alfredo E. Thorne, managing director and head of the Latin American Economic and Policy Research for J.P. Morgan Grupo Financiero, S.A. de C. V. (Mexico City). Joining Mr. Thorne is Soledad Loaeza. She is a professor of politics at the Colegio de Mexico in Mexico City. She is also a columnist for La Jornada, a Mexico City newspaper. Also on the panel is Dr. Susan Kaufman Purcell, Vice President of the Council of the Americas. As vice-president she works closely with the Council’s member companies in developing public and private meetings dealing with Latin American economic and political issues.
